**Archiving Memory Data**
**ENDING: ETERNAL SLUMBER**It takes you awhile as your brain manages to sift through the haze.
"$name" you say confidently.
**Validation Complete, Welcome No. 25945**
Just then you feel a surge of energy. As if *now* you have actually woken up. You open your eyes to get a full sense of your surroundings, and to find out who woke you up.
Rather than seeing a man standing at the side of a bed. You come to find out that the man was a voice echoing through an intercom and the bed was more of a metal casket. Definitely not the most snug place to get rest.
(link: "Examine the room")[(display: "Waking Room")]
[[Question the man on the intercom|Question]]
You begin to feel uneasy of the situation. You once again ask the man where you were and who he was.
"Well.. now that you are fully awake I can introduce myself. My name is Adam. You may refer to me as AK. I am also the one who woke you up. Welcome to your second chance at life."
(click: "second chance at life")[
"Second chance? What are you talking about? Did I almost die?", You reply.
"Not just you. All of humanity had faced near extinction. The world's leaders came together to come up with a solution. I was the head of one of their established organizations. A Research and Development team pioneering work on brain transference". Not even giving you a second to digest what you just heard, Adam continues.
"Allow me to sum up what I am saying. You and many others have been asleep.. in a way. Your thoughts had been stored away for 138 years, and now they have just been uploaded into your new electronic body", Adam pauses for a moment, giving you time to process the news you just heard.
[[Refuse Adam's claims|Refuse Claims]]
[[Ask him why you woke up|Why am I here]]
]
Your eyes glaze across the tiny, white room. It reminds you of a hospital, but the comfort of the room is drained away with the absence of windows. Not to mention, the peculiar metal cylinder you called a "bed".
(click: "peculiar metal cylinder")[Upon further inspection of the container you notice that a giant cord is attached to it from the ceiling of the room. The casket also appears to be on rails. Perhaps you were transported to this room inside of this.]You start to get tired of the non-sense that this man on the intercom is saying. You can't even recall allowing someone to play with your brain like that. Memories start to conflict with one another.
"If you don't believe me. Leave the room and there is a mirror to your left", Adam interjects between the battlefield in your mind.
(click: "mirror")[ The door slides open as you step up to it. You are at the end of the long hallway, and as he said. To the left, at the end of the hallway, is a large mirror.
(Display: "Mirror")
Adam's voice booms over your thoughts. It seems that there is an intercom fitted into every one of these rooms.
"So, now do you see the truth?", Adams questions in a condescending tone.
[[Accept|Why am I here]]
[[Continue to refuse him|Disassembled]]
]You start to understand, but as you do more questions arise.
"Well then why was I woken up now? Why was I asleep for so long?".
"Even though we had the ability to store people's memories there had been other issues with our solution. We lacked the resources to place every person within a new body", Adam replies.
"In your case, you, as well as many others, had been selected to be a part of humanity's defense force. Currently, there has been a group of people who have been causing trouble in our colony. So more defense units had to be created to maintain order."
This clearly wasn't the first time he has had to give someone this talk, but as he does you hear a voice unfamiliar to your own within your head. Just then you're given a library of military training you had been completely foreign to you.
**Defense Protocol Installation Complete**
"You have just been given all the information necessary to handle yourself in combat, including the coordinates to your first assignment. Another defense unit has recently gone haywire and needs to be terminated before she causes anymore damage to the colony. At the end of the hallway you will find your supplies.", Adam finishes as the intercom goes silent.
You make your way to the end of the room and see what he mentioned lined up on a tray attached to the wall. An assault rifle, Your Identification, and a taser.
(click: "Identification")[Your Identification has a picture of *your* face, your model number, and reads "Access level 3"]
(click: "taser")[The taser doesn't seem like the best of quality. At the least it could be used to fry machinery if held long enough against it.]
[[Go Outside|Outside]]You stare yourself down and start to get a grasp of what Adam said. Your eyes have a glossy sheen to them. The skin that wraps around your frame is probably just fake, as parts of your arms and legs are lined with wires.
While the features still resemble a human's, but one thing is for certain.
This is not *your* body. You continue your protest. There can be no way any of this is true. Adam gives in easily.
"That is fine with me. I actually prefer the defense units who don't ask so many questions", as Adam says that an alarm goes off within the hallway. A guard quickly exits a room at the end of the hallway and sprints towards you.
Before you can get a better sense of what is going on, the man presses a device against your chest. You feel a jolt course your body as you slump into the man's arms. Just as your vision fades you hear Adam speak up.
"It's Unfortunate that'll be unable to see the world I created. But I have no problem getting someone to take your place."
**ENDING: DISASSEMBLED**As you step outside, the information planted into your brain clearly gives you knowledge of where to go. You take a moment to look around and see everything for yourself.
The rest of the nearby area compares similarly to the windowless warehouse you emerged from. This area appears to be housing for others who were sleeping like yourself. However, in the distance you can see a bright hub of skyscrapers that litter the skyline. The location of your assignment is in that direction.
You have a nagging tick in your brain that keeps reminding you of your goal, but this is a lot to put on someone. You try to figure out if you've even ever held a gun before, let alone "terminated" someone.
[[Make a run for it|Run]]
[[Go to coordinates|Assignment]]"This is too much..."
You don't want to be pressured into this new life. Contemplating where or what you'll even due to begin to walk towards the only place that shows signs of life; the buildings you saw in the distance.
[[Continue|Second-guess]]You make your way to the your assigned location. Along the way you roamed the bustling streets of Adam's colony. While made obvious that the people inhabiting the city were nothing more than robots in people's skin, it was calming to see them interacting with one another. It definitely beat talking to a voice on a speaker.
(link: "Continue")[As you near the location the people riddled across the streets stare you down. As if there was a laser pointer aimed at your direction and they were all cats waiting for a moment to swat at you.
*Maybe they can tell I'm a defense unit. I do look different from the others*
After 15 minutes of walking and the occassional glance. You arrive at your location, An apartment. It looks to have seen better days. The walls rotted from years of neglect. You make it to the correct apartment number and stare down the door.
[[Knock on the door|Calm Entrance]]
[[Bust down the door. You're here to terminate, right?|Guns Blazing]]
]As you make your way towards the neon utopia your mind begins to wander.
*What are the consequences of disobeying my orders?*
*Will I end up like the woman I have to kill?*
*Will I be safe?*
[[Ignore and press on|Fugitive]]
[["Maybe I should just listen to Adam for now"|Assignment]]*No. This isn't me.*
It has been a month since you have woken up. You managed to find a place to call home within the slums. Many of the occupants don't seem to enjoy your company, but they appear to be too intimidated by you to make any violent moves. Once in a while a confident denizen would throw harsh words at you.
During this time you've held out on your own and not needing to eat with your new body is beneficial. However, you have heard about occassional defense units coming around the slums recently in search of you. You are worried that one of your neighbors will rat you out just to spite. In the meantime, you decide to just sit quietly in the battered house you now call home.
**ENDING: FUGITIVE**The moment you knock on the door you hear the shuffling of papers and footsteps on the other side. Soon after the door slowly opens and in front of you stands a short woman with long, auburn hair. She looks up to meet your eyes. Every alarm screams in your head. Information from the assignment telling you that this is the target.
"What can I do for you?", she says without hesitation.
[[Pull out your taser and attack|Taser]]
[["I'm here to talk"|Converse]]Even if the body you were given isn't strong enough to take down the door at least the old frame will give way. You pull out your rifle and slam your boot into the rotted wood. It manages to keel over in a single blow and you take the opportunity to rush in for a surprise.
While running in you spot a woman sprinting across the room. The woman has a shorter frame and long auburn hair. What can only be desscribed as alarms scream inside of your brain.
*This is the target*
[[Take the opportunity and shoot|Easy Target]]
[[Validate the target]]Reaching to your waist you attempt to grab your taser. Your reflexes faster than she can respond to as you press it against her skin. The shock from the device seems to do nothing to her as she casually reveals a handgun hidden behind her back.
You drop the taser and before you can react with your rifle she swiftly pulls the trigger. You collapse to the ground, feeling no pain as your mind goes dark.
**ENDING: MISSION FAILED**You introduce yourself without giving away your intentions. She tells you that her name is Mira.
"Cut it out. You're here to get rid of me. No other reason why a D-unit would be here. But.. you haven't even pulled your rifle out yet. So maybe I have you pegged wrong", Mira exclaims and she steps away from the door.
You realize she's had her right hand behind her back the entire time as she notions you in with her left.
You walk in.
[[Assume she has a gun and try to disarm her|Disarm]]
[[Negotiate]]There is no way a wanted criminal would answer their door without some kind of protection. You rush closer in an attempt to remove the weapon from her. Just as you do that she jumps back and reveals what is behind her back. As a sudden reflex you pull out your rifle and aim it at her.
It was just as you suspected. Mira had a handgun firmly clenched in her right hand, and it was aimed directly at you.
(display: "Fight")There is alot to this situation that you aren't sure about and Adam just sent you off to murder a random person. You decide you should at least try to get a better foothold on the world. You explain that you had recently "woken" up and that she was the first target she was assigned to.
"That sounds about right. Adam just wakes people up and expects them to follow him like a dog", Mira stares intently at every move you make as she says this. "He thinks of himself as a god, has eyes everywhere in the city and the moment you go against him you're removed. Wanna know why I was marked?".
The moment you open your mouth to ask she continues, "A powerful CEO managed a deal with Adam to get his daughter in a body. When that CEO flaked out on a part of his bargin Adam threw a tantrum and wanted him gone. I said no and ran."
(link-reveal: '"Why?"')[
"Because that man was my father! ..and when i didn't do it Adam just sent another lackey to do the job. We all just machines to him!", Mira hangs her head and goes silent. After a minute she looks back up and goes back to staring you down.
"So... do you see what Adam really is now, or are you still gonna kill me?"
[[Offer to join Mira|Join Mira]]
[[Follow your orders|Follow Your Orders]]
]*Maybe I am missing a few pieces of the puzzle*
You decide that Mira may just be in the right here and she can help you figure out what is really going on. If what she is saying about Adam is true you would rather be on her side. So you offer to lend her a hand and decide to face the consequences together.
**ENDING: REBELLION**The voice in your head conflicted with your own and you begin to have second thoughts on if she was the target, or just someone frightened over you just knocking down their door. However, the fight in your came to a halt as the woman managed to grab a handgun off the desk and aims it at you.
*Turns out this might be the target*
(Display: "Fight")Without a second glance, you make your way out of the apartment complex. New information floods your brain again and you reach the street giving you a location within the city to contact Adam. With nothing else to do you make your way to the destination.
In the 138 years you've been asleep you would not have ever expected to be in this predicament. You really don't find yourself complaining about it though. With the training you gained missions had become relatively simple. You wish you had more time to relax and enjoy this new world, but you have time to meet other defense units and they don't make a fuss. You protect civilians, they respect you and at the end of the day that's all you could ask for.
**ENDING: MISSION COMPLETE**You had been able to believe a lot of odd things considering you accepted all of what Adam told you, but something about Mira's story didn't seem right in your head. You figured she was making her sob story up in order to use you, or to catch you off guard.
Mira hangs her head down again and appeared to be lost in thought. You pull your rifle up and decide that you were done talking, but Mira continued to stay motionless. As if she had given up.
[[Wait.. Maybe|Join Mira]]
[[Stop the charade]]
The two of you are locked in a stalemate. Weapons aimed directly at each others head. Having no knowledge of the other rooms you decide your best option would be to [[run back out the door]] and fire. Otherwise you could try to [[rush]] her.As you make a dash towards the door the blast of gunshots echo the room. You manage to avoid their impact as you hide behind the wall outside of the room. Deciding this is your best choice, you position your rifle into the room and aim where she was.
(link: "Pull the trigger")[You spray into the apartment. Hoping that some of the bullets would meet their destination. She responds with her weapon and nearly grazes your hand. Suddenly, you hear a thud and you release the trigger.
Peeking into the room you see your target. Motionless on the ground and riddled with holes.
(Display: "Mission Complete")
]Your fight-or-flight response kicks in as you rush towards your target. Realizing at the last moment that she is an former defense unit and has the same abilities you have. Without a second thought the woman pulls the trigger. Your body doesn't feel any pain, but your body begins to halt. You fall over and your vision begins to fade.
**ENDING: MISSION FAILED**Seizing the chance you have you quickly take aim and take her down. As she falls she grabs in the air towards a desk. Laying on it is a handgun. One that she was persumably going to use against you. Luckily you managed to avoid the potential fight.
(Display: "Mission Complete")In a moment Mira crumpled to the floor, motionless. You breath a sigh of relief glad that the conflict didn't escalate, but wonder if this was the right thing to do. Rather than overthinking it you decide to head back to Adam and receive you next assignment.
**ENDING: SOB STORY**
